Here’s what you need to know.

What you need:

  • Binoculars
  • Notepad & Pencil
  • Cell Phone
  • Good Map
  • Internet Access
  • Hiking Boots or Sturdy Shoes
  • Towel
  • Change of Clothes (you might get wet)
  • Camera
  • Photo ID

Transportation:

  • During the race/hunt you must provide your own vehicle. None will be provided for you. If it breaks down, it is your responsibility to replace it and continue to play.

Maps:

  • We suggest a Thomas Brother’s Guide if available for your area. By 'your area,' we mean your city and surrounding area. Sometimes nearby small towns will be used, so get a map of your entire county if you can. Get this map as early as possible and practice using it. Navigation skills are essential and can easily make the difference in winning the race.

Internet:

  • You will want to be in cell phone contact with someone who can look up information on the internet for you during the race/hunt. This is not essential, but it is much more efficient than driving yourself home each time you need to check something on the computer. Each race/hunt is different. Some will need more internet help, others will need very little. You are almost guaranteed to need some.

Camera:

  • This is for the photo scavenger hunt portion of the race. It is suggested that you use a digital camera and transfer your pictures to disc prior to turning them in. You may also use a Polaroid or a camera with standard film. If you use film that must be developed, you may turn in the undeveloped film, but there is a $20 charge for processing each roll.

Hiking:

  • Some races have a hiking component, others do not. Bring some boots or sturdy shoes just in case.

Photo ID

  • You must bring a photo ID with you to the first checkpoint of the race. It will be necessary to complete your official registration.

Start of race:

  • Players must check this website for official start date and time. Be at your computer at the exact start time for the race and refresh your inbox frequently. Players will be sent an e-mail as the first clue of the race. This clue will instruct players to go to a specific location.

Money:

  • There are several points in the race/hunt where there is an option to spend money. This is never required, but doing so will usually gain you a slight advantage over those players who choose the other (non-payment) option. These “payment opportunities” will usually cost $1 to $10 and there will be several throughout the race. Please try to have exact change at any time that you use money throughout the race. Expect delays if making change is necessary.

Disclaimer:

  • The Great Scavenger Race will not be held responsible for any injuries that take place during an event. If, at any time during an event, a player feels at risk of injury, it is the player’s responsibility to choose another option or quit the race.
